Goodwill Industries of Central Texas
Jerry Davis will say he moved from Ohio to Austin in 1998 because he wanted to live someplace warm. However, his real motivation was the desire for a challenge unlike any he had before—taking a large, well-respected organization to an entirely different level. He succeeded. In the last 12 years, Austin Goodwill revenue grew from $16M to $48M. By selling what they could and trashing what was broken, and what was once considered a wasteful operation has now evolved. Today, this store nets $400,000 annually, and is responsible for creating over 150 jobs. Goodwill offers services in housing projects, high schools, strip malls, stores, and other agencies. Goodwill also faces competitive challenges, such as communities opposing the opening of stores and donation boxes adorned with the names of nonprofits, but owned by private individuals deceiving the public. Yet, Goodwill responds to these challenges with creativity, courage, and vigor.
